Our basketball star

There comes a time in every young faculty member's career when s/he gets asked to play against the students in some sort of sport. Brett couldn't resist a call for faculty to participate in a basketball competition - faculty v students. I believe all up there were to be three games - the first (28 April) Sebastien was suffering from a virus so we didn't go to watch, the second (6 May) Alex had Open Day for her class which we didn't attend anyway as she was ill. This was probably a good thing as I got a phonecall from him just before dinnertime letting me know that he'd had his nose broken and would be home from the hospital instead of heading out for a faculty dinner he was to attend. Apparently there was much blood and commotion from the other staff and students - Alex would not have coped well with this as she is very empathetic. After an amazing amount of time to give a tetanus shot, Brett was finally home after the kids had gone to bed. According to the doctor (actually the student translator helping him at the University hospital), his nose was only a little bit broken and he wouldn't need surgery but he did need to keep the bandage on his nose and keep it from getting wet. Absolutely no other followup care or advice was offered (nor sought I must admit - might have been different had Mummy been there) and Brett was considering playing soccer after less than ten days...The next morning Alex was keen to check out Daddy's nose as Mummy had explained to her the night before about Daddy's broken nose - anticipating that he'd arrive home whilst she was still awake and be wearing a very bloody shirt.
The black eye starts to appear the next morning. He took the bandage off after a couple of days and aside from having a fat nose and yellowing bruises, felt fine.
Apparently his team went on to win without him. Maybe he should rethink that basketball career...
