Mystery Food Item # 3659

It seems that there is a lot of food that we recognise here in Xiamen - but there is vastly more that we have no clue about.

Mummy likes to try out food that we've never had before, usually as a dessert or snack.

Alex convinced us Pipa (pea-pah 枇杷) fruit was a must buy as she had had it at school for snack. Apparently it is also called loquat (Mummy has heard of that though never tasted its fruit). They were known in old chinese as luju (芦橘) from loquat, but as they resemble a chinese musical instrument called a pipa, that is what they are called in modern chinese.

They are quite small so it is easy to go through several for a snack. The cost of this package is a little over US$1. We hadn't seen it anywhere before now.

Alex wanted to show us the best way to eat and enjoy a pipa. First she needed to finish her dinner. Then we peeled away the thin yellow/orange skin which is easy to do if it is ripe. Then, if you are a four year old child, you hold it by the stem and munch away. You should not eat the seeds as they are slightly poisonous but as they apparently don't taste very nice (bitter) that shouldn't be a problem. Before long you are done and if you do it right, only the four seeds, connected with a thin membrane, remain attached to the stem.
Alex easily managed three for dessert but couldn't quite finish a fourth.
Here she is enjoying discussing pipa.
